Staley Updates

The Frisco ISD Board of Trustees continues to weigh options for the future of Staley Middle School, after a presentation at the regular September Board meeting.

Trustees were presented with several options for the campus:

1. No change: Staley Middle School’s plumbing system would be repaired, at a cost of $3.5 million. Students may have to be displaced temporarily, and costs would be covered by the 2018 voter-approved bond program.

2. Light refresh: This option would modernize plumbing; refresh classrooms, complete bathroom remodel; modernize hallway wall tile, carpet and paint; update the front entry; revamp the kitchen and expand serving lines; and add new science labs. Students may have to be displaced temporarily. Cost: $19.6 million, covered by the 2018 bond.

3. Full refresh: This option would include everything in the light refresh, plus add five classrooms and a new art studio, and add open collaboration zones. Students may have to be displaced temporarily. Cost: $24.541 million, not covered by the 2018 bond.

4. New building: This option would cost $85 million, which is not covered by previously approved bond funds. The 2024 bond program that included a new Staley building was not approved by voters. If the District moved forward with this option, students would remain in the old building while the new one was constructed, but the new building would not address inefficiencies from declining enrollment.

5. Retirement at the end of 2025-26.

At the meeting, District leaders described two major challenges ahead for Staley Middle School: significant plumbing infrastructure needs and declining enrollment at schools in the region. In total, Staley and the three middle schools that students would be rezoned to — Trent, Griffin and Hunt — are 1,000 students under capacity, and projections only show slight increases in the next five years.

District leaders also presented projected cost savings if Staley is retired at the end of the school year, figures that Trustees requested at a recent workshop.

History

The September Board meeting continued a discussion that began after the failure of the 2024 bond program.

Throughout the decision-making process, the District’s top priorities have been and will continue to be the student and staff experience, transparency and honoring the legacy of Staley Middle School.
