Instructional Model

The 5E instructional model supports hands-on learning experiences that engages students to develop their own explanations and understanding of science phenomena. The 5E instructional model provides a planned sequence of instruction that places the student at the center of their learning experience. It helps to ensure:

  • Students engage in investigating an overarching phenomenon that is constantly referenced throughout the lesson.

  • Students participate in hands-on inquiry-based investigations.

  • Students talk to one another constantly (problem solving, sharing their thinking, building on one another’s ideas).

  • Students draft models (pictures, diagrams, etc.) of their thinking.

  • Students use evidence from their learning to support their ideas and draw conclusions.
