STAAR 2.0 Redesign

Starting with the 2023 spring test administration, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) has been redesigned to make the test more aligned to classroom instruction.

The STAAR redesign includes several components:

  • Online Testing and Accommodations - Online administration allows students to receive accommodations like those they get in the classroom and includes new non multiple-choice questions

  • New Question Types - HB 3906 established a “multiple choice cap,” meaning that no more than 75% of points on a STAAR test can be based on multiple choice questions. Texas educators helped design new question types that reflect classroom test questions and allow students more ways to show their understanding.

  • Cross-curricular Passages - Effective teachers coherently build students’ background knowledge and vocabulary in all subject areas. The STAAR redesign prioritizes cross-curricular Reading Language Arts passages that reference topics students have learned about in other classes (e.g., social studies, science, mathematics, fine arts, etc.).

  • Evidence-based Writing - Beginning with the 2022-2023 school year, Reading Language Arts (RLA) assessments assess both reading and writing (grades 3-8 English, grades 3-5 Spanish, and English I and II End-of-Course and include new question types and an extended constructed response, or essay, at every grade level.

Frisco ISD has been preparing our students and staff for several years by providing access to a variety of online lessons and assessments.

HB 1416 Accelerated Instruction Requirements

HB 1416, passed by lawmakers in 2023, modifies HB 4545. It establishes new requirements for students who do not pass STAAR. The law requires school districts to provide tutoring, or accelerated instruction, to students in each STAAR-tested subject where they did not perform satisfactorily. By state law, this includes students who do not test since they do not have a passing score.
