Technology plays an important role in today's classrooms, but in Frisco ISD, it is just one of many tools teachers use to support student learning.

Frisco ISD’s top priority is to provide every student with an exceptional education that prepares them for life after graduation. Along with that is a commitment to using technology with intention, with tools that support instruction rather than replace classroom discussions and hands-on experiences.

Frisco ISD is reaffirming that commitment to key stakeholder groups, hosting a Board of Trustees workshop this week to discuss existing policies and opportunities for improvement and clarity.

Technology as a tool, not a teacher

Frisco ISD parents have shared concerns about the amount of time their students spend on computers at school, mirroring a conversation and debate happening across the country. The District recognizes the validity of those concerns.

While families often ask how much time students spend on devices, Frisco ISD also knows that what students are doing on a screen is just as important as how long they are using one.

Students may use devices to write, design, code, collaborate or create digital products. These types of activities encourage active engagement rather than passive consumption, as well as fulfilling grade-level technology Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS.

By contrast, activities such as watching videos without an instructional task provide fewer opportunities for meaningful learning. Because the District's goal is to help students learn with technology rather than simply learn from technology, teachers are guided to make lesson plans that only engage digital tools when they support a lesson objective.

Updates and ongoing discussion

In the interest of continuous improvement, Frisco ISD leadership also remains responsive to community concerns around technology and student digital safety.

At this week’s Board workshop, the Technology Department provided a few updates and existing policies that address several concerns.

  • Students may only access YouTube videos categorized as educational.

  • The Frisco ISD filter now allows the District to monitor screen time and digital app usage metrics. This data may help shape future policies and guidelines, and will be part of ongoing discussions between campuses and Technology.

  • Digital learning guidelines are updated annually in the Frisco ISD staff handbook, as well as the required back-to-school campus training.

A balanced approach

Technology is one part of a well-rounded classroom experience. Students participate in a variety of learning activities throughout the school day, including face-to-face instruction, independent work, classroom discussion and creative projects. Students should use technology no more than 20 minutes at a time without taking a break from the technology.

This balanced approach helps students remain engaged while supporting both academic learning and healthy habits.

By combining intentional technology use with meaningful teacher-led instruction, Frisco ISD is preparing students to be thoughtful learners and creative problem-solvers in a rapidly changing world.
