The trailblazing first students of Frisco Flex were welcomed at a back-to-school bash this month, reinforcing the District’s commitment to ensuring every student has a place in the Frisco ISD community.
The event offered families a chance to pick up Chromebooks, meet Flex teachers and staff, and hear a presentation on the brand-new virtual learning program. As they enjoyed a meal from the Credit Union of Texas food truck, families talked about what Frisco Flex means to them.
“Academic structure with less pressure,” said Annabelle Zakarian, mom to sophomore Mason. “Hybrid just fits his learning needs.”
Mason, who lives outside District boundaries, is attending Frisco Flex through the Access Frisco program. Last year, he attended a large high school that didn’t offer the career and technical education programs he wanted. Now, he’s enrolled in Frisco Flex and Emerson High School, where he hopes to play basketball and take computer maintenance through FISD’s partnership with Collin College.
By the numbers (as of Aug. 18):
1,994 - Students taking one or more classes through Frisco Flex
70 - Hybrid students
89 - Full-time Flex students

Like Mason, Savannah Mmeje preferred a hybrid option. Savannah is a competitive gymnast and spends a lot of time training — a schedule that typically forces families to choose online-only programs. With Flex, however, Savannah can be at the gym in the morning, log into Flex classes when she’s available, then get an in-person high school experience in the afternoon.
“Her schedule’s pretty demanding, but she also wanted to look into going to public school. This program fit the bill,” said mom Natasha. “She can go into class and participate, she can go to homecoming — there’s more opportunities to explore.”
Then there are students who only take one or two Flex courses, like Scott Bolton’s daughter.
Scott, at the Frisco Flex event as both a parent and CUTX community engagement officer, said his daughter needed a virtual class to start her school day. Flex was the answer.
“Every child’s needs and situation are different,” he said. “This gives parents the ability to address those needs.” While his daughter might go full time, “this is a nice bridge to figure out what comes next.”
The District presentation included academic and schedule expectations, a weekly schedule, assessment plan, teacher responsibilities and more. It was a crash course in not only a new virtual program, but also in Frisco ISD.
“I challenge you when you log in to be curious, ask questions and engage,” said Dr. Chris Bigenho, director of innovative learning and Frisco Flex High School principal. “You’re writing the first chapter of a very exciting book.”
