Frisco ISD cross country runners made a big splash at the 5A Region 2 Championships this week, with three teams earning spots at the state meet and a total of 17 runners finishing in the top 25 of the boys and girls high school races at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.

Reedy’s Garrick Spieler won the 5A boys regional title, finishing the 5-kilometer race in 17 minutes, 11.62 seconds. He led the Reedy boys team to a second-place finish, which earned Reedy a trip to the 5A UIL State Championships at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The Wakeland boys will also be at state after finishing third in the region, led by the Wolverines’ top individual finisher, Dax Ritchie (fourth). Lebanon Trail’s Neeraj Kulkarni also had a terrific run, finishing third, and Reedy’s Triston Harden was fifth, giving FISD four runners in the top five.

The Wakeland girls team finished third in 5A Region 2 to earn a spot at the state meet. Liberty’s Sydni Wilkins was FISD’s top individual finisher, taking third. Lone Star’s Veronica Ambrosionek was 12th and Sophia Altieri was Wakeland’s top finisher in 13th.

A day before Tuesday’s 5A Region 2 races, Panther Creek’s Seth Rugg qualified for the 4A UIL State Championships, which will be at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock on Friday, Nov. 4. Rugg is the first state qualifier from Panther Creek, which opened in August as FISD’s 12th high school.
