Frisco ISD tennis teams are among the best in the state every year. This year, however, more of those teams will have the opportunity to be in the playoffs.
Nine FISD high school tennis teams will be in the playoffs this year, compared to four last year. The dramatic change is due to the University Interscholastic League’s new alignment, which is in effect for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years and greatly expands FISD’s playoff opportunities in all sports.
In tennis, FISD teams claimed every playoff opportunity available to them. The teams did the same last year, but at the time, all competed in the same UIL district and were limited to four spots. The new UIL alignment splits the 12 FISD high schools into three districts for all sports.
Reedy won the District 9-5A championship and the other 9-5A playoff qualifiers are Wakeland, Frisco and Lone Star. Centennial won the District 10-5A championship and the other 10-5A playoff qualifiers are Lebanon Trail, Independence and Heritage. Frisco ISD’s only school in Class 4A, Panther Creek, has also qualified for the playoffs.
Unfortunately, the 9-5A and 10-5A playoff qualifiers must face each other in the first round of the playoffs, so FISD teams will knock each other out of the playoffs. The first-round matchups are set for the ISD teams.
