Wakeland Boys Team Wins Region Swimming and Diving Title

The Wakeland Boys Region 3-5A Swimming and Diving Champions

Frisco ISD swimmers won 15 events and the Wakeland High School boys won a team championship at the Region 3-5A Swimming and Diving Meet that was held Thursday through Saturday at FISD’s Bruce Eubanks Natatorium.

The Wakeland boys dominated the leaderboard, piling up 362 points to finish well ahead of second-place Lovejoy (235). In the girls team standings, Wakeland had 238 points to finish second to Prosper Rock Hill (299).

Frisco High junior Jon Van Zandt was named the Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (TISCA) Boys Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet after winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and swimming the anchor leg of Frisco’s winning 200 freestyle relay. The TISCA Girls Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet was Independence’s Sienna Schellenger, who won the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Memorial junior Peyton Guziec was named the TISCA Girls Outstanding Diver of the Meet after winning the 1-meter event.

Wakeland coach Melissa Howard was named the Region 3-5A Boys Swimming Coach of the Year and Claudia Sunday, who coaches all of FISD’s divers, was named the Region 3-5A Girls Diving Coach of the Year.

The winner in each regional swimming event, along with the eight fastest regional times from non-winners in each event, qualified for the University Interscholastic League State Championships. The top two finishers in each region for diving qualify for state.

The state meet will be held in San Antonio on Feb. 19-20 (girls) and Feb. 26-27 (boys). Congratulations to all the FISD student athletes for their great performances.
