Independence Students and Alumni Collaborate on Artistic Showcase

Jul 08, 2020

If your travels should take you through Midland this summer, make sure to stop by the Museum of the Southwest where more than 30 pieces of artwork representing Independence High School students past and present are on display.

The exhibit is called “Unlocking Potential” and aims to focus on how one art teacher can have a great impact on students. Independence art teacher Leonard Buscemi was asked by the Museum of the Southwest Education Director and former FISD teacher Melissa Rowland to showcase the artwork of his students for a show at the museum. Independence High School’s art program is renowned for sending numerous artworks to the annual state VASE competition.

Buscemi coordinated with current and former students in the show that is currently on display through August 20. He also taught a professional workshop to educators across Texas through the Museum of the Southwest.

“Encouragement and compassion, teamed with teaching each student to their needs and then showcasing their successes, builds a foundation that has limitless potential,” Buscemi said.

The displayed artwork was originally exhibited through VASE, the statewide art competition, and includes everything from sculpture and digital drawing to colored pencil and pastel drawings.

“The Museum of the Southwest is honored to include the high quality works of Frisco ISD's VASE students in the 2020 exhibition rotation schedule,” Rowland said.
