Students at Heritage High School are rallying behind a 2019 graduate who is fighting for his life due to a blood condition.
The HOSA students, including sophomores Piyush Rath, Sushmitha Nalluri, Abinaya Kannapiran and Neil Gupta, have organized a series of efforts in support of Darryl Dugenio.
Dugenio needs a stem cell donation but has struggled to find a match due to a lack of diversity in the stem cell registry.
The Heritage students have worked to raise awareness and educate the community about the ease of stem cell donation in hopes of further diversifying the registry and helping to find a match for Darryl.
Their efforts were featured in November on several area news stations, including NBC 5, FOX 4 and WFAA.
"It's a really simple and almost painless process," Gupta told NBC 5, likening the donation to giving blood.
The group hosted a swab donation drive at Heritage on Nov. 15, adding more than 100 new people to the Be the Match registry at that event alone.
