Lone Star Challenge Team Makes History

May 21, 2019

Anderson Lone Star Challenge Team.Congratulations to the Anderson Elementary Lone Star Challenge team, which placed first in the state out of 107 teams.

Anderson received a score of 23,170 out of 24,000 possible points, achieving the highest score in Lone Star Challenge history.  The Anderson team is also the 1st team in Frisco ISD to have a perfect score on the Super Quiz.

Frisco ISD had nine of the top 10 places and 17 of the top 20 in the state.

Each year, Frisco ISD students compete in a number of academic competitions showcasing their knowledge base and ability to succeed under pressure. While Academic Decathlon is a high school competition, students actually begin preparing for the competition in elementary school through the Lone Star Challenge (LSC).

The LSC is an academic competition for elementary students in fourth and fifth grade. Each team consists of nine students who meet weekly studying, memorizing and quizzing each other on a number of academic topics.

2nd Place Taylor Lone Star Challenge Team. This year, the LSC focused on the 1950s. Students vigorously studied the era from every angle and read the book Breaking Stalin’s Nose in preparation.

The Lone Star Challenge involves four major events including a math/science quiz, a language arts/social studies quiz, a book-based essay and the Super Quiz. The Super Quiz is an event in which students from each team answer questions in a fast-paced relay.  Each team member answers five questions before an audience of friends, administrators and family members.

Spears Elementary Gifted and Talented teacher Marissa Bunn explained that LSC prepares students throughout the District for the rigors of middle school.

“The LSC helps students with time management and study skills. They’re learning to manage their extracurricular activities along with an academic team,” Bunn said. “These students have learned what strengths they have and how to work upon their areas of weakness to focus their time and energy.”
