Wakeland champs girls

Boys runner-upFrisco ISD runners were near the front of the pack Monday at the 5A Region II Cross Country Meet in Dallas, led by the strong performances of Wakeland High School's girls and boys teams. The Wakeland girls won their first regional title and the boys finished as the runner-up, allowing both to advance to the UIL State Meet on November 3 in Round Rock.

Wakeland girls coach Braegan Enright and boys coach Marty Tidwell were proud of their runners after the meet.

"I had been talking with Coach Enright about who we thought might step up today," Tidwell said. "We had some kids step up big time."

The Liberty High School girls team, the defending 5A state champion, also qualified for the state meet by finishing third in the region. The top individual girls finisher from Frisco ISD was Reedy High School's Colleen Stegmann, who took second. Among the boys, Wakeland's Nick Hendrix was fourth.

The meet also offered some great examples of sportsmanship.

-- Heritage High School star Alyssa Duhart, minutes after qualifying for the state meet, walked back down the course to cheer on the final runners trying to complete the race.

-- Lone Star High School's Steven Austin was having trouble with his spikes before the region meet, so Wakeland coach Marty Tidwell offered him a pair to use for the race. The result was a personal-best time, a spot in the state meet and a great example of working together in Frisco ISD.
