The Lebanon Trail High School Wind Ensemble was named runner-up in the Texas AAAA State Honor Band Finals this summer.
The ensemble performed "La Procession du Rocio" by Joaquin Turnia and arranged by Alfred Reed, "Saturn Returns" by Michael Markowski and "Solid Men to the Front" by John Philip Sousa, according to Kelly Wykoff, LTHS director.
Of all the 4A schools that competed in the state-wide contest, eight were accepted to the finals, and Lebanon Trail, with only freshmen and sophomores, placed second overall.
“Playing this music with these students was certainly a process from beginning to end," Wykoff said. "Through this process of learning, perfecting and finally performing it on an emotional and musical level, they became better musicians, instrumentalists, and, I believe, people. Our final concert was a special experience and one that we will not soon forget.”
Wykoff notes that it was a unique experience to compete with only 9th and 10th graders against full high school ensembles that included juniors and seniors. But the experience has provided a sense of drive to LTHS musicians.
“They see what is possible. We are incredibly proud of these students and all that they have accomplished. I can't wait to see what they are capable of this year and in the future,” Wykoff said.
