CTE Students Win State and National Honors

Audio/video production students at the Career and Technical Education Center earned several awards this school year, including recognition in national contests and multiple top places in a statewide competition.

The students serve as crew members of Frisco ISD-TV and are led by their instructor and executive producer Eva Coleman.

Victoria Bruce, a junior at Lone Star High School, won first place and $100 in the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) High School Journalism Competition for her video sports story, Now That's a Stretch. 

Kate Furney, a junior at Wakeland High School, earned third place in the video news story category for Power of the PItch. Maddie Cargile, a junior at Wakeland, received an honorable mention in the video feature story category for Strength Between Miles.

All three advanced to the national contest after finishing first at the state level in the Press Women of Texas (PWT) Edith Fox King High School Contest. 

The following students were also honored at the state level:

  • 2nd Place – Video News Story – Cyberbullies Beware – Darrin Sohm

  • 3rd Place – Video News Story – Puzzled Looks – Kennedy McGilvery

  • 1st Place – Video Feature Story – Strength Between Miles – Maddie Cargile

  • 2nd Place – Video Feature Story – Custodian of Citizenship – Lauren Goodman

  • 3rd Place – Video Feature Story – Talent Driven – Jared Gonzalez-Yapp

  • 1st Place – Video Sports Story – Now That’s A Stretch – Victoria Bruce

  • 2nd Place – Video Sports Story – Military Moves You – Mari Forbes

  • 3rd Place – Video Sports Story – Creativity Runs Through – Madison McFarlane

  • 2nd Place – Best Newscast: Radio or Television – Frisco ISD-TV #080 – Lauren Goodman, Josh Laulom, Darrin Sohm, Kate Furney, Victoria Bruce, Jared Gonzalez-Yapp, Madison McFarlane

In addition, Lauren Goodman, a senior at Reedy High School, earned an honorable mention nationally from the Student Television Network (STN) for Frisco ISD-TV’s show open for the 2017-18 school year.
