Wakeland Soccer Teams Headed to Regional Tournament

It was a big weekend for the Wakeland High School soccer teams, and another big weekend is ahead for the Class 5A Region II tournament qualifiers.

The Wakeland girls defeated Prosper 2-0 on Friday, and the Wakeland boys defeated Centennial 3-1 on Saturday to earn spots in the regional tournament, which will be at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton.

The regional semifinals will be Friday and the championship games will be Saturday. On Friday, the Wakeland girls will play Joshua at 12:30 p.m. and the Wakeland boys will face Mansfield Lake Ridge at 5:30 p.m.

The Wakeland boys, the defending 5A state champions, were No. 7 in the final regular-season Region II rankings by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches. The Wolverines’ playoff run has included wins over Centennial (No. 1 in the Region II rankings) Prosper (No. 3) and Wylie East (No. 10).

The Wakeland girls were No. 2 in the final regular-season Region II rankings and Prosper was No. 3. If Wakeland defeats Joshua on Friday, it could meet top-ranked Highland Park in the championship game.
