Middle School Students Compete in "Cross Town Read Down"

Mar 03, 2018

On March 3, students from 11 FISD middle schools celebrated books and the love of reading with the Cross Town Read Down.

A total of 27 teams participated in the District competition at Clark Middle School. The winning teams were:

1st: Team Desi Dummies from Fowler
2nd: Team TSSA from Scoggins
3rd: Team Fifth Eclipse from Vandeventer
4th: Team Infinity from Staley

To fund the District competition, two middle school librarians, Kim Taber from Clark and Debbie Owen from Staley, wrote a grant through the Frisco Education Foundation’s Grants for Great Ideas program.

The winning grant allowed the librarians to purchase sets of books for each school, as well as trophies and medals for students. The grant also provided funds for author Victoria Scott to come and speak to all attendees. Victoria Scott is the author of several young adult novels, including Hear the Wolves and the Fire & Flood series.

The Cross Town Read Down competition featured teams of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students competing in a tournament-style competition with questions coming from the set of 10 books each campus received. Competing teams were from Clark, Cobb, Fowler, Griffin, Hunt, Nelson, Pioneer, Roach, Scoggins, Staley and Vandeventer middle schools.
