The Frisco Police and Fire Departments staged an elaborate mock accident scene in the parking lot outside Lone Star High School on Thursday as part of the 15th Annual Shattered Dreams presentation.
The two-day program aims to educate students about the dangers of underage drinking and the severe consequences that can result from impaired driving.
Juniors and seniors watched a video in the school auditorium to set the stage for the motor vehicle crash reenactment, which included an actual response from police, fire, PHI Air Medical and other emergency responders.
The premise was that several students were drinking alcohol outside an athletic event on campus. When they went to leave, a student driver plowed into a group of students standing in the parking lot. One student was killed, and more than a dozen other students were injured. The female driver was arrested.
Lone Star Junior Amanda Caspari played the role of a student injured in the accident who had been drinking and riding in the car.
“I hope that this presentation promotes more safe driving, whether intoxicated or not,” she said. “A lot of us in high school don’t think anything can ever happen to us, and having this here makes everything hit closer to home and feel more real for a lot of us.”
The program continues Friday with an assembly featuring guest speakers, including an emergency room doctor and others who have been impacted by the consequences of drinking and driving.
Shattered Dreams rotates between Frisco ISD high schools each year and coincides with the lead-up to student celebrations such as prom and graduation.
It is funded through the support of a Citizen Advisory Committee, which oversees Frisco’s Photo Enforcement program and voted to use red light fines to fund the presentation.
