Frisco ISD wrestlers finished strong Saturday (Feb. 11) on the final day of the 5A Region 2 championships, with the Frisco High School girls winning a team championship, the Reedy High School boys finishing as runner-up and eight FISD wrestlers winning individual titles.
Frisco piled up 162 points to win the team championship at the meet held at Independence High School. Four other FISD girls teams finished in the top 10: Memorial (6th, 68 points); Lebanon Trail (8th, 66); Reedy (9th, 59); and Wakeland (10th, 57).
Reedy was second only to Justin Northwest in the boys team standings, finishing with 145.5 points. The other FISD boys teams in the top 10 were Heritage (5th, 99); Lebanon Trail (8th, 77.5); and Wakeland (10th, 74.5).
Heritage’s Cortilius Vann, who won the boys 175-pound class, was named the Boys Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet. The other FISD boys weight class champions are Lebanon Trail’s August Schutte (144 pounds), Reedy’s Logan Deering (150 pounds), Liberty’s James-Ethan Harris (157 pounds) and Independence’s Axel Tipton (165 pounds). Boys regional runners-up from FISD are Centennial’s Enrique Uribe (113 pounds), Heritage’s Kai McDermott (126 pounds) and Wakeland’s Kyle Templeton (215 pounds).
FISD girls regional champions are Frisco’s Janaya Baeza (100 pounds), Liberty’s Mercede Alvarez (107 pounds) and Frisco’s Destiny Sims (138 pounds). Girls regional runners-up from FISD are Frisco’s Natalie Lopez (114 pounds), Frisco’s Summer Whitlock (120 pounds), Wakeland’s Malia Nguyen (126 pounds), Lebanon Trail’s Eva Hampton (152 pounds) and Memorial’s Caitlyn Flaherty (165 pounds).
The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the UIL State Championships, which will be Friday and Saturday (Feb. 17-18) at the Berry Center in Cypress.
Frisco’s Jon Reid was named the 5A Region Girls Coach of the Year and Heritage’s Robert Hubbard was named the Boys Coach of the Year. The Girls Assistant Coach of the Year is Lebanon Trail’s Karina Quiros and the Boys Assistant Coach of the Year is Heritage’s Jake Sachs.
