The Liberty girls basketball team is headed back to the UIL State Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years.
The Redhawks earned a spot in the 5A state semifinals with a 57-47 victory over McKinney North in the 5A Region 2 championship game Saturday at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. Liberty, which won the state title in 2020, is back at the state tournament for the fifth time overall.
Liberty will take on San Antonio Wagner at 7 p.m. Thursday (March 2) at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The Redhawks have won their state semifinal game in all four previous trips to state. If they win their semifinal Thursday, they'll play in the 5A championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday. A Frisco ISD team has played in the last four title games, with Liberty getting there in 2019, '20 and '21 and Memorial playing in the title game last year.
Memorial lost in double overtime in the championship game last year, while Liberty won its state semifinal games in 2020 and 2021 in overtime. Obviously, there have been a lot of exciting moments for FISD at the tournament in recent years.
Good luck to Liberty at state!
