The depth of the swimming and diving programs in Frisco ISD showed at this year’s UIL 5A State Swimming and Diving Meet in Austin, where FISD student-athletes had 20 top-five finishes, earned seven medals and finished as the state runner-up on both the boys and girls team leaderboards.
The Wakeland High School boys, with a lot of new faces on the team that won state titles in 2021 and 2022, finished in second behind Georgetown. The Reedy High School girls were also state runner-up, finishing second only to Cedar Park.
State qualifiers from 10 FISD high schools competed in the meet Friday and Saturday (Feb. 17-18) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. The Wakeland boys 200-yard medley relay team of Jonathan Michaels, Jackson Armour, Brandon Wu and Matteo Sanchez Lopez won gold, and Armour earned a second gold when he tied for first in the 100 breaststroke. Armour, a sophomore, and Beorne Champion’s Griff Orloff each finished that race in 56.37 seconds.
Armour also earned a bronze medal in the 200 individual medley, and Michaels took bronze in the 100 backstroke. In the girls competition, Liberty freshman Izabella Oushalkas earned a silver in the 100 backstroke and Wakeland senior Logan Morris took home bronze in the 500 freestyle. The Reedy girls 200 freestyle relay team of Lily Powell, Isahbel Krasht, Lauren Garagiola and Riya Gowda also earned a bronze medal.
The Heritage boys team also cracked the state top 10, finishing seventh. The Wakeland girls were 11th in the team standings, followed by the Liberty girls in 12th.
A week earlier, the Panther Creek High School girls swimming and diving team finished as the 4A state runner-up.
