Wakeland is headed back to the UIL state baseball tournament.
The Wolverines earned their spot in the state tournament by sweeping a best-of-3 series against Forney last week in the 5A Region 2 final. Wakeland is now in the state semifinals for the third time, adding to appearances in 2017 and 2010, and will take on Georgetown at 7 p.m. Thursday (June 9) at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. If Wakeland wins its semifinal, it will play in the 5A state championship game at noon on Saturday, June 11.
Tickets, parking and spectator information can be found here. Please note the clear bag policy that is in effect for Dell Diamond.
After finishing second in District 9-5A, Wakeland (25-13) has been on an incredible run in the postseason. The Wolverines are 10-1 in the playoffs, including sweeps of Denison, W.T. White, Independence and Forney. Wakeland's only playoff loss was in Game 1 of its best-of-3 series against Lufkin, and the Wolverines followed up that loss with back-to-back wins on a Saturday to stay alive.
In the regional final against Forney, Wakeland trailed 1-0 entering the seventh inning of Thursday's Game 1 before rallying for two runs and the 2-1 victory at Riders Stadium, the home of the Frisco RoughRiders. Wakeland dominated Game 2, taking a 5-0 lead and holding on for a 5-2 win at Rockwall-Heath High School.
Wakeland was a 5A state semifinalist in both 2010 and 2017. Georgetown is also making its third appearance in the state tourney and was the state runner-up in 2015 and 2019.
