For the second straight year, the Wakeland baseball team is headed to the 5A Region 2 finals.
The Wolverines will face Forney this week in a best-of-3 series, with the winner qualifying for the UIL state tournament. The regional final series will start at 7 p.m. Thursday (June 2) at Riders Field, the home of the Frisco RoughRiders. (Full schedule below).
Wakeland advanced to the regional final by rallying to win Games 2 and 3 on Saturday in its best-of-3 series against Lufkin. Wakeland lost Game 1 of the series against Lufkin, 6-3, on Thursday but then won back-to-back games on Saturday by scores of 2-1 and 6-4.
Wakeland's next challenge is Forney, which defeated Lone Star in last week's regional semifinal. Wakeland (23-13) is trying to make it back to the state tournament for the first time since 2017, when the Wolverines advanced to the state semifinals. Wakeland also qualified for the state tournament in 2010. Forney (28-9-1) was a 5A state finalist in 2018.
The UIL 5A state tournament will be in Round Rock, with state semifinals on Thursday (June 9) and the championship on Saturday (June 11).
