Michael Thomas, currently a principal in Richardson ISD, has been named the principal of
Shana K. Wortham Intermediate School.
Wortham Intermediate will be the first intermediate school in FISD and will exclusively serve fifth and sixth graders. The campus presents a unique opportunity for Frisco ISD to create an innovative environment tailored to meet the specific needs of this
Thomas has been in education for 15 years and brings experience as the former principal of Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet, a campus that serves grades PK-6. His bachelor’s degree is from the University of Texas at Dallas and his master’s
degree is from Lamar University. He looks forward to utilizing his prior administrative experience to serve fifth and sixth grade students when Wortham Intermediate opens in the fall of 2023.
“Wortham Intermediate will be an outstanding school, and I am eager to begin working with students, staff and families on what lies ahead,” Thomas said.
Wortham Intermediate will be constructed between Alma Road and Dr. Kenneth Cooper Park in McKinney’s Craig Ranch community.
Attendance zones for the new school will be finalized in the fall of 2022, pending Board approval. The 5-6 campus is expected to impact attendance zones for Comstock, Elliott, Ogle and Isbell elementary schools, as well as Scoggins, Lawler and Vandeventer
When the intermediate campus opens, Comstock, Elliott and Ogle will transition to serving students through fourth grade, while Scoggins will become a seventh and eighth grade campus. The goal is for students zoned to the new intermediate school to
attend classes together starting in fifth grade and matriculate as a group to Scoggins and then Emerson High School.
Funded through the 2018 bond program and originally imagined as middle school #19, the capacity of Wortham Intermediate will be the same as a typical FISD middle school. With current capacity issues at middle and elementary schools in the area, this
campus will be built using the same funds allotted under the original bond program while alleviating the need for both a new elementary and middle school campus.
The three-story campus design incorporates ideas and feedback from District staff, who stressed the need for flexible, open spaces to accommodate active, hands-on learning and future instructional practices. Learn more about the design.
Congratulations to Thomas as he begins his journey as the first principal of Wortham Intermediate!
