Frisco ISD student-athletes made another strong showing at the UIL State Track and Field Championships this year, led by three state champions Friday (May 13) at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of UT-Austin.
Hannah Pfiffner of Wakeland won the Class 5A girls high jump title for the second straight year, while Chris Johnson of Liberty won the 5A boys long jump and Kirin Chacchia of Heritage won the girls 300 hurdles. Additional Frisco ISD medalists were Lone Star's Hannah Forde (silver in the girls triple jump), Lone Star's Kelis Jules (silver in the girls 100-meter hurdles), Lebanon Trail's Laila Hackett (silver in the girls 100 meters) and Memorial's Ronald De Madet (bronze in the boys long jump).
Pfiffner, a junior, cleared 6-feet, which was six inches better than any other competitor.
"It's just awesome," Pfiffner said after receiving her gold medal. "I'm so glad all my friends and family were here to support me. It's just been really exciting."
It was also exciting for Johnson, who entered the state meet with a personal best of 23 feet, 5 inches in the long jump. In his second jump Friday, he eclipsed that with a leap of 23-10 3/4. That would've been good enough for the title, but Johnson had an even better jump left in him. On the senior's final attempt of high school competition, Johnson soared for a mark of 24-4 1/2, nearly a foot better than his PR had been just a day earlier.
"I'm in shock," Johnson said. "It's crazy. Last high school event and going out and winning and PR-ing."
Chacchia, a junior, overcame injuries throughout the season and won with a time of 42.54 seconds.
"I'm just super excited right now," Chacchia said after the win. "I guess you could call it disbelief, but I'm just amazingly happy. I don't have a better way to describe it."
