Wakeland Boys and Girls Soccer Teams Advance to State Title Games

Apr 15, 2022

The Wakeland boys and girls soccer teams are back in the 5A state title games at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown for the second straight year. This time, the teams hope to do what they did back in 2018, when the Wakeland boys and girls swept the UIL state titles.

The Wakeland girls, who lost in the state finals last year, will play Grapevine in the state final Saturday (April 16) at 11 a.m. The Wakeland boys, who are the defending 5A state champions, will play Dripping Springs at 1:30 p.m.

The Wakeland girls defeated Magnolia 3-0 in the semifinals on Thursday morning, and in the evening, the Wakeland boys beat Fort Worth Trimble Tech 3-1 in the semifinals. The Wakeland girls are trying to win their third state title, to go along with titles from 2011 and 2018. The Wakeland boys, who have advanced to the state final in the last six state tournaments, are trying to add a fifth championship to their crowns in 2010, 2017, 2018 and 2021.

Due to the effects of COVID-19, the UIL canceled the playoffs in 2020.

In 2018, Wakeland became the first  school to win UIL boys and girls soccer championships in the same year since 1985. Richardson High School is the only other school to do it since the UIL added soccer as a sport in 1983.

Good luck, Wolverines!
