School Board Trustees Finalize 2022-23 Attendance Zones

The Frisco ISD Board of Trustees finalized attendance zones for the 2022-23 school year during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 8. 

The approved zones help balance enrollment and resources at existing schools, while preparing for the opening of two new campuses: Panther Creek High School and Minett Elementary School. 

After reflecting on the initial proposed zone and community feedback, the Board of Trustees has agreed to offer several attendance exceptions in hope that it will provide some families the opportunity to make decisions regarding what is best for them. Impacted families can expect emails on Nov. 9 that include maps, neighborhoods, busing information and any online forms that are related to exceptions.

Elementary Schools (link to approved map)

As Minett Elementary School opens to students in August of 2022, some neighborhoods within the current Boals, Corbell, Miller, Newman, Phillips, Purefoy, Robertson and Sparks elementary school zones are part of the approved attendance zone adjustments. The District is working to balance student enrollment across several elementary campuses that are built to accommodate 760 students, while effectively utilizing classroom space.

The approved boundaries will impact all elementary students in those zoned communities with one exception. The Board of Trustees has agreed to offer incoming fifth graders the opportunity to finish their last year at the campus they attended in the 2021-22 school year. Of course, they can also elect to move to the newly approved zone. Incoming fifth graders who would like to stay at Miller, Phillips, Corbell or Newman in the 2022-23 school year will receive a form to complete in a Nov. 9 email.

  • Some residential areas in the current Miller zone will move to Phillips Elementary. 

  • Some residential areas in the current Phillips Elementary zone will move to either Boals Elementary or Robertson Elementary as the District works to balance student enrollment.

  • Some residential areas in the current Corbell Elementary zone will move to Purefoy Elementary. 

  • Some neighborhoods from Newman Elementary will be zoned to Minett Elementary. 

  • Some neighborhoods from Sparks Elementary will be zoned for Fisher Elementary. This move brings Sparks below 90% capacity, allowing it to open to transfers.

Middle Schools (link to approved map)

The approved zone change will move about 100 Pioneer Heritage students to Cobb Middle School. Pioneer Heritage was designed to accommodate 1,000 students and the campus is projected to be at 1,123 students in the fall of 2022 without rezoning. The approved attendance boundary modification is identical to the initial proposed zones and will impact incoming sixth, seventh and eighth graders as well as future classes. 

The Board of Trustees has agreed to offer incoming eighth graders the opportunity to finish their last year at Pioneer Heritage if they do not want to transfer to Cobb. A form will be included in a Nov. 9 email for the parents of incoming eighth graders who would like to stay at Pioneer Heritage for the 2022-23 school year.

In the approved adjustment, Pioneer Heritage also gained a new zone that runs along the Dallas North Tollway from Main Street to Cotton Gin. The zone is flanked by Legacy Drive on the west side and does not currently have any buildings or students.

High Schools (link to approved map)

Changes to the Frisco, Lone Star, Reedy, Memorial and Wakeland high school attendance zones are included in the approved changes. The Board of Trustees reflected on the feedback they received from students and their families over the past month and made adjustments to the initially proposed zones. 

  • Panther Creek High School will open in the fall of 2022 with incoming ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students from the current Lone Star and Memorial high school zones. Incoming freshmen, sophomores and juniors who have an older sibling at Lone Star or Memorial can choose to attend the same high school as their sibling and remain there through their own graduation.

  • Select residential areas currently zoned for Reedy High School will instead attend Frisco High School beginning in 2022-23. The change will impact incoming ninth and tenth graders as well as future classes; incoming juniors and seniors will not be affected. Incoming ninth and tenth grade students with an older sibling at Reedy can elect to stay at Reedy through their own graduation.

  • Some residential areas of Frisco High School will instead attend Wakeland High School. This change will impact incoming ninth graders as well as future classes; incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors will not be affected. Incoming freshmen who have an older sibling who attends Frisco High School can elect to attend either Wakeland or Frisco High School through their own graduation.

  • Select residential areas currently zoned for Reedy High School will instead attend Wakeland High School beginning in the 2022-23 school year. The approved change will impact incoming ninth and tenth graders as well as future classes; incoming juniors and seniors will not be affected. Incoming ninth and tenth graders with an older sibling at Reedy High School can elect to move to Wakeland or to attend Reedy through their own graduation.

Parents can expect more detailed information in a Nov. 9 email.

Most Frisco ISD high school campuses were designed for 2,100 students; however, fall of 2022 projections have Lone Star High School at 2,405 students, Memorial High School at 2,122 students and Reedy High School at 2,435 students without rezoning. Under the current projections without rezoning, Wakeland has a steady decline of students and this change will help balance anticipated enrollment. Notably, Frisco High School is the oldest high school campus in the District and does not have the same functional capacity of 2,100 students as the neighboring campuses.
