The Reedy and Wakeland volleyball teams advanced to the second round of the UIL 5A playoffs on Tuesday with three-game sweeps of their opponents. Reedy beat The Colony and Wakeland beat Wylie East.
The season ended for Heritage and Independence, which each battled a District 10-5A co-champion on Tuesday. Heritage lost to defending 5A state champion Lovejoy in three sets and Independence nearly knocked off one of the state's top-ranked teams, McKinney North. After losing the first two sets, Independence won the next two to force a deciding fifth set. McKinney North won that set 15-11.
Second-round matches will be played either Thursday or Friday (Nov. 4 or 5).
Led by District 9-5A champion Reedy, Frisco ISD’s four volleyball playoff qualifiers begin postseason play on Tuesday. The top four seeds from 9-5A (Reedy, Wakeland, Heritage and Independence) will play the top four seeds from 10-5A (McKinney North, Lovejoy, Wylie East and The Colony).
District seeding for FISD teams was finalized Friday when Wakeland defeated Heritage in a tiebreaker for second place. The 9-5A seeds from one to four are Reedy, Wakeland, Heritage and Independence.

The first round of the playoffs will match two of the state’s toughest volleyball districts.
In the Dallas Morning News’ 5A-others area rankings, Lovejoy is No. 2, McKinney North is No. 3 and Reedy is No. 6. Lovejoy is the two-time defending 5A state champion, Reedy has advanced to the regional quarterfinals three times in the last four years and Wakeland was a regional finalist in 2018.
