Football Teams Battle for District Titles, Playoff Position

Nov 02, 2021

Entering the final week of the football regular season, the playoff possibilities can sometimes be very complicated. This year, however, the picture is pretty clear – at least in regard to which Frisco ISD teams will be in the playoffs.

In 5-5A Division I, Lone Star and Wakeland have clinched playoff spots and Reedy can earn a spot with a victory Friday against The Colony. In 7-5A Division II, Frisco and Liberty have earned spots in the postseason.

Here’s a rundown on where those teams will be seeded depending on this week’s games:

LONE STAR

The Rangers (8-1 overall, 7-0 in 5-5A I) will win the 5-5A I title and be the district’s top seed with a victory Friday against Denton Ryan (8-1, 7-0). The 7 p.m. game at Ford Center matches two of the state’s top teams, with Ryan ranked No. 1 and Lone Star No. 5 in the 5A Division I state rankings. If Lone Star loses Friday, it will be the second seed from 5-5A I in the playoffs.

WAKELAND

The Wolverines (7-2 overall, 6-2 in 5-5A I) have completed their district schedule and have a bye this week. Wakeland will be the third seed from 5-5A I in the playoffs.

REEDY

The Lions (4-5 overall, 4-3 in 5-5A I) will clinch the fourth playoff seed with a win against The Colony (4-5, 4-3). The game is Friday at 7 p.m. at Kuykendall Stadium. Reedy has looked like a playoff team in its last three games, winning decisively against Denton and Centennial and losing 35-28 to Wakeland. A loss to The Colony will keep Reedy out of the playoffs.

FRISCO

The Raccoons (8-1 overall, 6-1 in 7-5A II) have clinched a playoff spot entering Thursday’s 7 p.m. matchup with Memorial (4-5, 2-5) at Ford Center. Frisco suffered its only loss to undefeated Lovejoy (9-0, 7-0), and the Raccoons would earn a share of the district title if Liberty (8-1, 6-1) beats Lovejoy on Thursday and Frisco beats Memorial. If Liberty wins and Frisco loses, Frisco will be the third seed from the district. If Frisco beats Memorial or Liberty loses to Lovejoy, Frisco will be the second seed from 7-5A II. In the case of a three-way tie in district between Frisco, Liberty and Lovejoy, Frisco will be the second seed from 7-5A II in the playoffs based on point differential.

LIBERTY

The Redhawks (8-1 overall, 6-1 in 7-5A II) have clinched a playoff spot entering Thursday’s 7 p.m. game at Lovejoy (9-0, 7-0). Liberty’s thrilling 49-45 victory over Denison (6-3, 4-3) last Friday earned it no worse than the third seed from 7-5A II in the playoffs. Liberty can earn a share of the 7-5A II title with a victory at Lovejoy, and if that Liberty win is combined with a loss by Frisco to Memorial on Thursday, then Liberty would be the top seed from 7-5A in the playoffs. If Liberty loses to Lovejoy, it will be the third seed. If Liberty beats Lovejoy and Frisco beats Memorial, then Frisco, Liberty and Lovejoy would be tri-champs of 7-5A II and Liberty would be the third seed from the district in the playoffs based on point differential.
