UPDATED:

Frisco ISD's outstanding tennis season finished up on Friday as Lebanon Trail lost to defending state champion Highland Park in the 5A Region 2 final. Independence lost to Highland Park, which has won five straight state titles, in a 5A Region 2 semifinal.

Previous update ---------------------------

The first two rounds of the UIL team tennis playoffs showed again that Frisco ISD is a tennis power. The District’s four playoff qualifiers – Independence, Lebanon Trail, Liberty and Centennial – rolled over their opponents to move into the third round.

Unfortunately, that's when the four FISD playoff teams had to play each other.

On Tuesday, Lebanon Trail defeated Liberty and Independence topped Centennial in 5A regional quarterfinals. After Independence and Lebanon Trail had shut out their first two playoff opponents, they got tough battles from their FISD friends and rivals. The Independence-Centennial score was 10-7 and the Lebanon Trail-Liberty score was 10-4.

Original story ----------------------------

One District sweeping another in the first round of the University Interscholastic League playoffs in any sport is a rarity. But in Frisco ISD, the amount of tennis depth is also very rare.

And so on Tuesday, FISD’s four team tennis playoff squads – Independence, Lebanon Trail, Liberty and Centennial – did what is becoming common by each advancing to the area round of the Class 5A team tennis playoffs.

Independence, the District 9-5A champion, shut out McKinney North 10-0. Lebanon Trail, the 9-5A runner-up, also won by a 10-0 score over Wylie. Liberty beat Prosper Rock Hill 10-2 and Centennial beat Lovejoy 11-2. The combined score of 41-4 in the district sweep speaks to the high level of tennis in FISD.

All four FISD playoff qualifiers advanced to the area round for the second straight year. It’s unusual for one UIL athletic district to achieve that, and even more unusual for one school district to accomplish it, but it’s not surprising. In the midseason Texas Tennis Coaches Association rankings of Region 2, which encompasses much of North Texas, all four FISD playoff teams were in the top 5: Independence (2nd), Lebanon Trail (3rd), Liberty (4th) and Centennial (5th). Wakeland (6th) and Reedy (8th) did not qualify for the postseason despite being highly ranked.

Last year, all four of the FISD playoff qualifiers advanced at least three rounds in the playoffs, which is when they started facing each other in the bracket.

The area round of the playoffs will be later this week and schedules will be dependent on the rainy weather in North Texas.

Frisco ISD is proud of all its tennis programs!
