Football coaches often say that rankings don’t help anyone win games, which is true. But the rankings are still a nice sign of recognition for a team, and with three weeks left in the regular season, four Frisco ISD teams are ranked among the top 20 5A teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The rankings put out by the Dallas Morning News have Lone Star at No. 4 and Frisco at No. 5. The pair of teams are still undefeated in their respective football Districts, with Lone Star at 5-0 in District 5-5A Division I (and 6-1 overall) and Frisco at 5-0 in District 7-5A Division II (and 7-0 overall). On Friday (Oct. 22), Frisco will play at Lovejoy, which is 7-0 overall and No. 3 in the rankings.

The two other FISD teams in the Dallas Morning News rankings are Liberty (12th) and Wakeland (16th). Liberty is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in District 7-5A Division II, while Wakeland has a 5-2 overall record and is 4-2 in District 5-5A Division I.

Football is the only sport in which all FISD varsity teams do not play in the same district. That’s because the University Interscholastic League divides Class 5A into two divisions, putting schools with slightly larger enrollments in Division I and the slightly smaller schools in Division II.

The Texas state football rankings, published by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, reflect that separation into divisions. In the Division I state rankings, Lone Star is 7th; in the Division II state rankings, Frisco is 8th.
