The depth of strong volleyball teams in Frisco ISD creates a lot of great matches each week. That’s the positive side of having so many good volleyball players and teams in the District.
The downside?
Only four teams from District 9-5A will advance to the postseason. That means some very good teams – teams that could certainly win some matches in the postseason – will not get that opportunity.
The last week has been a great example of the competitiveness and parity in the District as three matches went the maximum five sets in the best-of-five format. Heritage beat Independence in five sets, Liberty went five sets to hand Reedy its first loss in District 9-5A, and then Memorial took down Liberty in five sets.
“Playing in the 9-5A volleyball district allows us all to compete at our highest level each game day as the quality of volleyball is extremely competitive,” Reedy coach Katie Rudd said. “This is different than many other districts where there could be only one or two top-level teams.”
It leads to a lot of exciting matches, and the quality of volleyball has left the District fairly jumbled in the middle of the standings. With seven District matches remaining for each team entering the contests of Tuesday (October 5), the top seven teams in the District are:
Reedy … 10-1
Heritage … 8-3
Memorial … 8-3
Wakeland … 7-4
Independence … 6-5
Liberty … 5-6
Lone Star … 5-6
