Frisco ISD has joined forces with Collin County Adult Education and Literacy (AEL), coordinated through Grayson College, to provide community members with free access to GED or high school equivalency preparation classes.
The classes, which are offered at no cost to participants or the District, began this month on Mondays through Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Initially, the classes are being taught virtually from the FISD Student Opportunity Center, with participants joining from home. The classes are expected to eventually transition into an in-person format.
FISD has long been an approved testing site for individuals looking to earn a high school equivalency certificate through the state of Texas, but for the past few years, the District has not offered classes to help community members prepare for the exam. The GED, or General Educational Development, is the only high school equivalency test or credential recognized in all 50 states.
“We are excited to bring this offering to Frisco ISD residents at no cost to the District,” said Kecia Theodore, director of alternative education. “We know that education, and especially the completion of a high school diploma or its equivalent, is life changing for individuals because it opens doors and creates new opportunities for success.”
As an approved Pearson Vue testing site, Frisco ISD is one of only a handful of locations in the area authorized to administer the test under the direction of the Texas Education Agency. The new GED prep classes are offered as a service to community members to help them be successful on the exam.
In addition to GED prep courses taught in English, Frisco ISD residents can also access GED prep courses in Spanish, English (ESL) classes and Citizenship classes through Collin County AEL, but those classes will be held on varying days and times, both virtually and in-person at locations outside of FISD.
