Although temperatures still feel like summer, football season is here. It’s already Week 3 of the season, in fact, and for many teams, that means the start of district play – when the games start factoring into the playoff race.

District play begins this week, and as a reminder, FISD teams are split into two districts for football. While FISD teams are in the same Class 5A district for all other sports, the University Interscholastic League splits 5A into Division I and Division II for football. The schools in Division I have a slightly larger enrollment than those in Division II.

Here are the football districts for 2021:

DISTRICT 5-5A DIVISION I
Centennial
Heritage
Independence
Lone Star
Reedy
Wakeland
Denton
Denton Ryan
The Colony

DISTRICT 7-5A DIVISION II
Frisco
Lebanon Trail
Liberty
Memorial
Denison
Lake Dallas
Lovejoy
Princeton
Prosper Rock Hill

The top four teams from each district advance to the playoffs, and Division I and Division II will each crown a state champion. Last year, FISD’s playoff representatives in 5A Division I were Lone Star (which went three rounds in the playoffs), Independence (two rounds) and Wakeland (one round). In 5A Division II, Frisco advanced three rounds in the postseason and Liberty also made the playoffs.

Tickets are available to all fans this year and all FISD games at home venues (David Kuykendall Stadium, Ford Center and Toyota Stadium) will be streamed live on the NFHS Network.
