Frisco ISD Class of 2021 Includes 37 National Merit Scholars

Jul 15, 2021

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named its final 2021 National Merit Scholars. These recently announced winners are recipients of college-sponsored awards.

With these additional 21 National Merit Scholars, the Class of 2021 included a total of 37 award recipients.

The college-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. Nationwide, there were 4,100 college-sponsored merit scholarship recipients in the 2021 competition underwritten by 160 public and private higher education institutions.

Earlier this spring, NMSC announced winners of corporate-sponsored merit scholarship awards and National Merit $2,500 scholarships. This included 16 Frisco ISD students.

This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2019 when more than 1.5 million juniors took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as an initial screen for this honor.

The highest scoring participants, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were then named Semifinalists. This included more than 60 students in Frisco ISD announced this past fall.

The 17,000 Semifinalists were analyzed by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors who reviewed the student’s scholarship application, which provided information about academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstration of leadership abilities, employment experience and awards received. Of these, 16,000 students were named Finalists.

It is from these Finalists that the NMSC names approximately 7,500 Merit Scholars who will together receive nearly $30 million in scholarships.

Congratulations to the 37 National Merit Scholars including these college-sponsored winners:
