Led by the Liberty High School boys team winning the 5A state title, Frisco ISD track and field athletes finished the year impressively Friday at the UIL State Meet.
Frisco ISD athletes took gold in two individual events, won gold in a relay and earned medals in 10 events overall in the state competition at UT-Austin’s Mike A. Myers Stadium. It was a tremendous performance, and it was capped by the first FISD boys team to win a state track and field title.
Junior Evan Stewart made it possible for the Redhawks, who piled up 54 points to beat second-place Manvel (45.5) in the 5A standings. Stewart won the long jump, was second in the triple jump and was part of the 4x200-meter relay team that finished second and the state champion 4x400 team. Liberty clinched the state title with the victory in the final event of the night, the 4x400, as the team of Chris Johnson, Cameron Wooley, Bryson Wyatt and Stewart won in a time of 3 minutes, 15.39 seconds, which MileSplit.com reports is the fifth-fastest time in the nation this year.
It was an incredible moment for the Liberty track and field team.
“In that moment, I was ecstatic! Full of adrenaline and excitement,” Liberty coach Chip Gregory said. “I was just so proud of those young men. It brought me to tears.”
Liberty is the first FISD boys track and field team, and the sixth FISD track and field team overall, to win a state title. Frisco High won four straight 2A girls titles from 1981 to 1984 and Lone Star won the 3A girls title in 2013.
Student-athletes from six FISD high schools won medals at Friday's state meet, including Wakeland’s Hannah Pfiffner, who won the girls high jump. Heritage was FISD’s highest finisher in the girls standings, placing seventh with the help of Kirin Chacchia’s second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and a second-place finish in the 4x200 relay.
It was a tremendous day for all of Frisco ISD.
“I think it shines a light on the depth and range of Frisco ISD track and field programs,” Gregory said. “I definitely feel like Frisco ISD made a lasting impression on a lot of people during the 2021 state meet.”
Congratulations to all the FISD student-athletes who competed at the state meet. Full team and individual results can be found at uil.tfresult.com.
