Students and teachers continue to evolve and thrive, and the annual FISD Vertical Art Show is no different. The annual visual art show celebrates the immense talent and creativity of students across the District.
Typically, hundreds of children and their parents gather with District staff in the hallways and foyer of the District administration building where art is displayed and organized by campus. Due to social-distancing guidelines, the community and family members near and far are invited to view the 2020 Digital Vertical Art Show in an eGallery.
Each Vertical eGallery Art Show features on-campus and Virtual Academy student artwork from high schools and their feeder schools.
Elementary Visual Arts Lead Kendyll Harden teaches at Miller Elementary and admires the growth her students have shown over time, especially this school year.
“Despite ‘how’ we are teaching has evolved, ‘why’ we teach and empower our students is clearer than ever,” Harden said. “Through art, students begin to believe in themselves and their own ideas.
“As a teacher, we cannot help but be passionate about the things our students believe in as we empower them with time, space and permission to explore their own ideas.”
Lebanon Trail High School art teacher and secondary lead Kristen Summers agrees and stresses the importance of nurturing the confidence of students so that they can develop their own solutions when faced with problems.
“Students need the social emotional learning artistic space to explore, and the arts provide a safe place to express ideas and be themselves,” Summers said.
The quality of instruction and work of students during this school year has been truly admirable. Whether students are completing art at home or on-campus, they are finding solace in an artistic refuge.
“We taught our students how to take the best photo to showcase their artwork,” Summers said said. “From start to finish, the students own their progress and artwork.”
“We are excited to celebrate our students and showcase what art has been doing for them and what they’ve been able to accomplish.”
