Drum Majors Conduct with Heart

Oct 08, 2020

With Friday night lights well under way across North Texas, drum majors across Frisco ISD have been excited to get the season underway.

“I am so excited to be out on the field surrounded by the band,” said Lone Star High School drum major Ritika Deivasigamani. “Unless you’ve been in a marching band, it’s hard to describe just how rewarding it is to be recognized for your hard work during half time.

“Despite the pandemic, band students are doing a great job overcoming obstacles as we meet individual and whole group goals.”

As students pulled on their gloves and pulled down their face coverings to reveal nervous smiles, it was clear that they were prepared to walk on the field and were confident in the drum majors that held their attention.

Each band has a select few students who conduct on the podiums at the edge of the field. While each campus has its own selection process, these drum majors are consistently selected for their leadership skills and growth mindset.

The role of the drum major has been even more important during COVID-19. When it was unclear what the 2020-21 school year or marching season would look like, drum majors maintained their composure and positive attitudes, helping to lead their fellow students through the uncertainty. Drum majors knew that they would need to go to greater lengths to make sure they maintained long-standing campus traditions, while keeping the traditional familial bonds of the marching band.

When it was uncertain what the 2020-21 school year or marching season would look like, the leadership of these students with their positive attitudes was vital.

“Drum majors are a key part of the marching band leadership structure and are pivotal in developing the culture of the band,” said Fine Arts Coordinator Chris Cansler. “It is a high-pressure position with lots of people leaning on them to keep the band together.”

Congratulations to these 35 students across all 10 high schools who go above and beyond and represent their school and band with pride.
