Workers broke ground this summer on a second FISD swimming facility that will also include new offices for the District Athletics Department. The $26.6 million facility, expected to open in the fall of 2021, will be adjacent to the current Bruce Eubanks Natatorium and just east of FISD Memorial Stadium along North County Road.
The supplemental swimming facility will double the pool and locker room area currently available to FISD swimming and diving programs, which have grown immensely since the original natatorium opened in the fall of 2003 – as the District opened its second high school. The District now has 10 high schools, and during the 2019-20 school year, FISD had five times as many high school students participating in swimming and diving programs than in 2003. The District’s 11th high school, Emerson, will open in 2021 and a 12th high school is also planned.
The swimming facility will also provide a second weight room for swimmers and divers, as well as allow for additional programming opportunities for FISD students. The added space will also make it possible to increase community programming, such as the Learn to Swim program.
“Our hard-working students and dedicated coaches have helped create a tradition of excellence in our Frisco ISD swimming and diving programs,” District Athletic Director David Kuykendall said. “The added space will allow them to grow along with our District and create opportunities for more students to be part of the programs.”
The swim facility will also include the new headquarters for the Athletic Department, which has been housed in the same space for 12 years while adding staff to serve a District that has more than doubled in size since 2008. The new facility will also include a multipurpose professional development space, to be used by all FISD departments, that can accommodate up to 256 people. It will be the largest meeting room in a District in which many departments have outgrown current meeting spaces.
