Frisco ISD is making some adjustments to plans for the 2020-21 school year based on the rapidly changing situation with COVID-19 and information from the Texas Education Agency and state-level elected officials. In order to provide additional time for staff training, the development of master schedules and ensure the safest possible environment for students when they return to campus, Frisco ISD has made the decision to start the 2020-21 school year in a completely virtual environment for all students.
The first day of school will remain August 13. This afternoon, the School Board approved moving three staff professional development days to provide more opportunities for teacher and staff training earlier in the school year. These days are non-instructional days for students, so there will be no school on August 21, August 28 and September 4. See the updated school calendar here.
Details are still being finalized to begin the school year in a virtual environment for all students. At this time, this period is planned to last the first three weeks of the school year with the first day of on-campus instruction on September 3 for those students who have selected in-person learning. Instruction will continue online for those students who have selected Virtual Academy. Additional information will be shared during a special Frisco ISD School Board meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 23 at 6 p.m.
Additionally, after recent developments from TEA and as a result of FISD’s decision to provide an online environment for the first three weeks, Frisco ISD is pleased to share that it will be possible to take almost all secondary courses through the Virtual Academy, though some courses will still require an on-campus component. Please see the Frisco ISD website for additional information.
To provide as much consistency as possible for students during this transitional period, on-campus students will be served in a virtual learning environment with the same teacher and classmates who will be in their on-campus classroom. Students who have opted for Virtual Academy will begin the school year as previously planned. At this time, Frisco ISD is making plans for on-campus athletic and fine arts activities while awaiting further guidance from the University Interscholastic League (UIL).
An opportunity to select or change your student's instructional environment will be available prior to the beginning of the school year. The District will utilize the Student Portal for parents to submit a change to what was previously communicated to the District via the commitment form. Parents will be able to start submitting changes on July 27. The deadline to request a change will be July 30 at 11:59 p.m. After this period, the next opportunity to change your student’s instructional environment will be at the end of the first nine weeks of school, which falls on October 16.
