FISD Families Asked to Communicate Plans for Next School Year

The primary parent or guardian contact for each Frisco ISD student will receive an email next Monday, June 29 asking families if they plan to send their students back to school for face-to-face instruction or would like to opt-in to the District’s new online Virtual Academy for the start of the 2020-21 school year. Families will be asked to respond by July 10. While many questions remain regarding the new school year, and FISD understands that personal sentiments may change as COVID-19 conditions evolve, timely feedback is critical to FISD in preparing for the first day of school on August 13. Look for additional communication coming from the District on Monday and continue to follow the COVID-19 FAQ webpage for new information as it becomes available.

Approved Budget Provides Additional Support for Students

The Frisco ISD Board of Trustees approved the District’s 2020-21 budget this week, prioritizing several items identified in recent years by the community. The $605 million operating budget accommodates the expansion of Pre-Kindergarten to a full-day program for eligible students, supports the implementation of 1:1 classroom technology and provides additional support to help students navigate new academic opportunities in online learning, dual credit and more.

Given the uncertainty related to the coronavirus and potential for future cuts in state funding, FISD took a conservative approach to development of the 2020-21 budget. “It is hard to predict what financial resources may be necessary moving forward as we continue to respond to COVID-19,” said Chief Financial Officer Kimberly Smith. “The depth of the economic downturn and what it will mean for the state’s finances is also unclear. With the likelihood of funding cuts on the horizon, we’re moving cautiously while making sure we meet the needs of our students in this unprecedented environment.”

FISD is Hiring Bus Drivers for the New School Year

As the District actively prepares for students to return to the classroom in August, it is working to address an anticipated shortage of school bus drivers. The approved 2020-21 budget includes an increase in the minimum hourly wage for hard-to-fill positions such as bus drivers, custodians and special education paraprofessionals. Bus drivers will now start at $19.50 an hour. A transportation job fair is scheduled next Wednesday, July 1 to screen and interview applicants. Encourage Your Kids to Keep Reading This Summer

Make reading a regular part of your student’s daily summer routine. It is the perfect way for children to pursue their unique interests while maintaining and strengthening important reading skills such as vocabulary and comprehension. Frisco ISD students have access to more than 9,400 books through two online sources. During eLearning, students set new records by accessing digital books and audiobooks at more than 5 times the regular usage rate with more than 96,000 ebooks and audiobooks read. Librarians also hosted more than 900 live or recorded read alouds and book talks.

New Families Encouraged to Register Now

Frisco ISD has a dedicated team processing new student registration for the 2020-21 school year now through July 10. The process is entirely online, except for those students who require language testing. Early registration helps Frisco ISD plan for enrollment and staffing needs, including class size considerations. It also helps families prepare for the new school year. Returning families are also asked to complete the annual registration process as soon as possible if they haven’t already done so.

Student Transfer Requests to be Reviewed This Summer

Frisco ISD students in grades K-8 have the ability to transfer within the District to schools with a projected enrollment of less than 90% capacity. Applications will be accepted online from July 14-29 for the 2020-21 school year. Transfer requests submitted for campuses other than those listed on the District website will not be considered. Approval is only good for one year and is not guaranteed in future years to the same campus or feeder campus.
