FISD Athletes Win Nine Medals at State Track and Field Meet

May 13, 2019

Liberty High School's Nissi Kabongo

Frisco ISD high school athletes brought home nine medals, including three golds, from this year’s UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin.

The Liberty girls team led the way Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium by finishing in fourth place in the 5A girls team standings, and the Reedy girls finished seventh. The top FISD boys team was Liberty, which was 12th.

Senior Nissi Kabongo of Liberty had a tremendous meet, earning a medal of every color. She won the high jump by clearing 5-foot-10, four inches higher than any other competitor, and also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the 800 meters.

Kabongo said she was happy with the way she performed in her final high school meet. But she also said the ending was bittersweet because of how much she has enjoyed high school track and field and how she’s grown over the years.

“People say, ‘You’re really good,’ but they should’ve seen me when I was a freshman,” Kabongo said. “I’m really happy with the way I’ve developed as an athlete and as a person.”

Liberty senior Sanye Ford also earned a gold at the meet by winning the girls long jump with a leap of 18-9. Independence’s Terry Smith was the other FISD gold medalist, winning the boys 110-meter hurdles in 13.99 seconds.

FISD’s other medalists were Reedy’s Colleen Stegmann, who was second in the girls 3,200 and 1,600. Stegmann was a very close second in both races – a mere 42 hundredths of a second back in the 3,200 and 31 hundredths in the 1,600.

Liberty freshman Evan Stewart earned a silver in the boys triple jump and was fourth in the long jump. Frisco senior Simone Watkins took home a bronze in the girls 100 hurdles and finished fifth in the 300 hurdles.
