Summer Bond Projects Include Turfing of Fields

Feb 07, 2019

The Frisco ISD bond package approved by voters in November included funding for the installation of artificial turf on baseball and softball fields at three high schools. After weighing several factors including location, field size and ability to host revenue-generating tournaments and playoff games, the District has selected these high schools for the installation of artificial turf:

  • Frisco
  • Independence
  • Reedy

All 10 FISD high schools will have artificial turf installed in their baseball and softball batting cages. The three high schools selected for artificial turf on fields are from different areas of the District, with Frisco centrally located, Independence to the east and Reedy to the west.

The three schools also meet the criteria for hosting tournaments and playoff games, including a distance to the outfield fence that appeals to most teams selecting a neutral site. One benefit of artificial turf is that it reduces rainouts and can sustain heavy use better than natural grass, making it more attractive as a site for revenue-generating playoff games and tournaments.

The projected cost of the artificial turf installations is $6 million. It’s part of the voter-approved $691 million bond package that includes funding to build four new schools, maintain and repair existing facilities, provide additional resources for classroom technology and school security, as well as additional student opportunities in academics and fine arts.

The artificial turf will be installed in the summer. That is also the expected time when paving of marching-band fields will begin at FISD high schools. The paving, which is projected to cost $6 million, will allow more parking space and create a better surface for band practice. Mud, heat and insects currently present challenges for bands practicing on grass areas.

Other bond projects scheduled to begin this summer include an expansion of the District’s athletics offices, playground resurfacing at elementary schools and a number of school renovations including new roofing, carpet, paint, playground equipment, PA systems and other upgrades and repairs at select campuses.
