Wakeland Senior Wins Davey O’Brien Scholarship
Wakeland High School’s Hannah Mandell has been selected as the winner of the Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship Award. The prestigious award, which includes a $30,000 scholarship, is awarded annually to a high school senior based on his or her academic achievements, community service, character, leadership and sports participation. Mandell, a member of Wakeland’s state champion soccer and cross country teams in 2018, plans to play soccer for Pomona College in California. Read more about Mandell’s award here.
Fowler Student Wins Frisco ISD Spelling Bee
After 16 rounds, six elementary and middle school students have earned the opportunity to progress to the Collin County Spelling Bee. Congratulations to eighth grader Anveeth Vietla of Fowler Middle School, who won the Frisco ISD Spelling Bee with the word “tussive.” Other top finishers attend Lawler, Maus and Clark middle schools, as well as Ashley and Comstock elementaries. Students Advance to the Semifinals of the National Trumpet Competition
Congratulations to Maadhav Kothuri of Frisco High School and Drew Pistorius of Pioneer Heritage Middle School who have advanced to the semifinal round of the National Trumpet Competition. Kothuri won the competition last year and is looking forward to returning for another year. Kothuri and Pistorius will perform live in front of a panel of judges on March 16. Good luck!
FISD Swimmers Excel at District Meet
It was a big day for Reedy High School and Wakeland High School on Saturday at the District 10-5A Swimming and Diving Championships. Reedy won the girls title, while Wakeland won the boys title at FISD Bruce Eubanks Natatorium. Reedy’s Amelia Liu and Michael Belair were named the Outstanding Swimmers of the Meet, and Reedy’s Jenny Beagle was named the District Girls Coach of the Year. Wakeland’s Melissa Howard was named the District Boys Coach of the Year. More details on the District meet here.
