Frisco ISD Swimmers and Divers Excel at State Meet

Frisco High School 200 Medley RelayLiberty High School Swimmer Jiwoo Oh

As Liberty High School senior Jiwoo Oh was pushing through the final 25 yards of the 100-yard breaststroke final Saturday, he heard the people cheering him on.

“Every time I popped my head up I heard it,” Oh said.

The cheers he heard weren’t only from Liberty fans. Swimmers and coaches from throughout Frisco ISD were along the edge of the pool, rooting Oh on to a victory.

“That’s the way we do it in Frisco,” said Bruce Eubanks, the former Frisco High coach who is the namesake of Frisco ISD’s natatorium. Eubanks, now retired but still helping out, saw FISD swimmers and divers put together another strong performance at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Swimming and Diving Meet.

FISD continued its long streak of having at least three of its teams, including boys and girls, finish in the top 10 in state. On Saturday, the Frisco High School girls finished fifth, the Liberty High School boys finished seventh and the Frisco High School boys were 10th.

FISD swimmers and divers earned medals in six individual events and two relays. Frisco’s Jack Jannasch earned two of them, finishing with silver medals in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.

“I had my best times in both races. I really can’t complain,” Jannasch said. “It’s a good day.”

FISD’s first gold medal came in the first event of the day, the girls 200 medley relay. The Frisco High team of Abby Lin, Jadyn Jannasch, Emily Sandwisch and Sydney Bope won in a time of 1 minute, 49.88 seconds. It was the second straight win in the event for Frisco High.

It was a tight race, with Frisco beating Dripping Springs by nine hundredths of a second. When Bope touched the wall and the final results were shown, the swimmers screamed in joy.

“When she touched the wall,” Sandwisch said, “all the emotions just came out.”

That relay was close, but Oh’s victory in the 100 breaststroke had the closest finish of the day. At the final turn, Oh was trailing Highland Park’s Henry Wang and he knew he had to give it everything he had left. Ignoring the pain, and listening to all the support from the FISD coaches and swimmers alongside the pool, Oh pulled even with Wang and then won by one hundredth of a second. His time was 56.93 seconds.

“I thought, I’ve got to push it,” Oh said. “I’m a senior and I want to have a good ending.”

He did, along with the entire District.
