Heritage Coach Selected for Dallas ISD Athletics Hall of Fame

Chryste Gaines

Chryste Gaines, the track and field and cross country coach at Heritage High School, will be part of the inaugural class of inductees into the Dallas ISD’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Gaines, a 1988 graduate of South Oak Cliff High School, competed for Team USA in two Summer Olympic Games – in 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney, Australia. She won a gold medal in the 4x100 relay in the 1996 Games and a bronze medal in the same event in 2000.

Gaines is one of 10 charter members of the Dallas ISD Hall of Fame. The induction class also includes Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Banks and a pair of Heisman Trophy winners (Davey O’Brien of Texas Christian University and Tim Brown of Notre Dame).

While at South Oak Cliff, Gaines won two 5A state titles in the 200 meters and was part of a state champion 4x100 relay.

“I had great coaches, great teachers and a great support system there,” said Gaines, who was also a track star at Stanford University. “Just very good people pushing you and wanting the best for you.”

Gaines, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony May 4 in Dallas, is now part of the support system for her student-athletes at Heritage.

“If you ask them, they’d probably ask me to back off,” Gaines said with a laugh. “But I won’t, because they will thank me someday.”
