Uniform GPA Proposal – Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

FISD’s primary concern with this proposal is in regard to the weighting of Pre-AP courses. We believe that not providing higher grade points for Pre-AP courses will result in students not choosing to participate in these more challenging courses which also help connect them to the more rigorous AP courses. In addition, we have chosen as a local district to weight AP courses a more heavily than college dual credit to encourage more students to take AP courses and exams due to the rigor. Many of our students choose the dual credit courses and we value that quality option for our students at Collin College This proposal would give equal weight to AP, IB and dual credit courses. It appears the recommendation will be to implement this uniform calculation with next year’s incoming high school freshmen. It also appears that this uniform GPA would be required for purposes of determining eligibility for university admission, but not necessarily for rank in class.
Frisco ISD has already communicated its opposition for this proposal to the THECB. Parents are also encouraged to send a letter stating their concerns to both the THECB and their Texas state legislators.
