The Box Sisters Give Hair to Wigs 4 Kids
Carmen, Taylor and Hanna Box prepare to give their long ponytails up for children in need.
As most kids approach the end of school, they are thinking about swimming, snow cones and going to the movies.
Three of the four daughters of Staley Middle School teacher Michelle Box are having those same thoughts, but now they revolve around their new haircuts.
The girls were twirling and shaking their new haircuts at the hair shop of Dianne Johnson on Main Street (Hair We R) in Frisco, excitedly talking about how great they would be for swimming and brushing. The three sisters - Taylor 9, Hannah 8, Carmen 4 - had eight inches cut from their long locks to give to Wigs 4 Kids. The two older girls go to Rogers and were anticipating showing their friends their new “dos” on the last day of school. The youngest sister, Rani, just turned two and hasn’t had time to grow hers out yet!
Michelle stated that their decision to give their hair was out of necessity and also a way to teach about giving and a sense of community. It was time for a trim, she said, and although their dad will not be overjoyed that his girls no longer have long hair, they felt it was a good way to teach about giving to others in need.
The teacher’s parents do a great deal of outreach to prisoners and to those less fortunate in Central American countries, so the idea of helping the greater community is a natural.
A few years ago, the older girls even asked others to give money to send for foreign aid instead of birthday gifts for them.
“Our girls have so much and want for nothing,” mom said. “This is a way to give back.”
