Austin Widner and Shreya Balamurali of Liberty High School were the Rotary Spotlight Students of the Month for December 2017. These top LHS students were honored by the club at their December 14th meeting held at the Winners Club at Toyota Stadium.
Widner is the son of Billy and Staci Widner and Balamurali is the daughter of Prabhakaran Balamurali and Sheeja Gangadharan.
Balamurali is a senior, a member of National Honor Society, president of French Club and a member of the French National Honor Society. She served as secretary of the Girls Lead the Way program for two years. Her interests include serving on the yearbook staff and the Independent Study and Mentorship (ISM) program. Balamurali is also an AP Scholar with Distinction. A pianist, she has received the mark of merit with the Trinity College of London Piano Exam.
She plans to major in neuroscience at The University of Texas at Dallas with a minor in child learning and development. Her interest in young children led her to be involved in creating Root to Fruit, an organization that provides art and science classes at local libraries. She has also spent time as a volunteer tutor at a school for children on the autism spectrum.
Widner is a junior at Liberty High School. A well-rounded student, he is a lacrosse player, orchestra student, wrestler, and a member of the National Honor Society, LHS Student Council, and Young Men’s Service League. He is a winner of the Frisco Lacrosse Leadership Award and earned All-Region Orchestra in 2015. Widner is also LHS Academic All-Star and a two-time recipient of the UIL Scholar award.
Widner has been working with a preparation club hoping to bring Junior ROTC to Frisco ISD.
He hopes to attend a military academy and major in mechanical engineering.
