FISD Athletes Headed to State Track Meet

Kene_Nwangwu_440Over 50 FISD athletes competed in the UIL Region II-5A Track & Field meet held Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 at Maverick Stadium on the UT Arlington campus. In the team competition, the boys from Heritage High School placed 6th, and the girls’ teams from Heritage and Frisco High School tied for 5th.

Individually, FISD had eleven athletes qualify for the UIL State Track & Field Meet by finishing in the top two places in their respective events at the regional meet, or by being chosen at-large.

Four FISD athletes qualified for the state meet in more than one event. Senior Carter Blunt of Independence High School continued his dominance in the distance running events, taking first in the region in both the 1600m and the 3200m. Blunt broke his own regional record in the 1600m along the way with a time of 4:10.09. Blunt will attempt to win his third consecutive state championship in both events.

Freshman Whitney Williams of Frisco High also qualified for the state meet in multiple events. Williams placed first in both the 400m and the long jump and placed second in the triple jump, qualifying her for all three events. Heritage Senior Kene Nwangwu took first in the region in both the high jump and the long jump, qualifying him for the state meet in both events. And Liberty High School Freshman Nissi Kabongo qualified for state in both the 800m and the high jump by placing second in the region in both events.

In the 4A classification, Reedy High School sent four athletes to the Region II-4A Track & Field meet held Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 at Texas A&M Commerce. Freshman Alyssa Griffith took second place in the pole vault, becoming the first track & field state qualifier in school history.

  • Carter Blunt, Independence: Boys’ 1600m (1st place) & 3200m (1st place)

  • Alyssa Duhart, Heritage: Girls’ 800m (1st place)

  • Alyssa Gridiron, Heritage: Girls’ 100m (1st place)

  • Alyssa Griffith, Reedy: Girls’ Pole Vault (2nd place)

  • Nissi Kabongo, Liberty: Girls’ 800m (2nd place) & High Jump (2nd place)

  • Hannah Mandell, Wakeland: Girls’ 1600m (3rd place)

  • James Manders, Heritage: Boys’ Pole Vault (1st place)

  • Kene Nwangwu, Heritage: Boys’ High Jump (1st place) & Long Jump (1st place)

  • William Petersson, Centennial: Boys’ Discus (2nd place)

  • Nicholas Schiwitz, Frisco High: Boys’ 800m (2nd place)

  • Whitney Williams, Frisco High: Girls’ 400m (1st place), Long Jump (1st place), & Triple Jump (2nd place)

The state meet will be held Thursday, May 12 through Saturday, May 14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of UT Austin.
