Jason Cardona was confused and thought he must be in trouble when he was pulled out of his regular class at Roach Middle School Tuesday afternoon and told to report to his English as a Second Language classroom.
But he wasn't in trouble. Jason is a star soccer player for the Roach Middle School Rams. His dream has been to meet FC Dallas player Blas Perez, also known as Super Raton. Perez is also the father of a daughter who attends Roach.
While Jason Cardona is a star on the soccer field, this native of Honduras has struggled with learning English and his other studies. So his teachers at Roach, led by ESL teacher Thamara Milan, decided to inspire him by making his dream come true.
Perez, a native of Panama, greeted a wide-eyed Jason with a firm handshake. The Roach student was almost speechless in the presence of his idol. Perez took advantage of that star-struck silence to encourage the young man to study and try harder in school, as well as on the soccer field. He told Jason that this is the same thing he tells his own children. Perez autographed a jersey for Jason, greeted Jason's parents who came to witness the surprise, and also shook hands and gave an autograph to one of Jason's close friends.
Principal Terri Gladden said she was very happy to have such a willing parent and professional sports star take time out of his day to visit with a student. Perez told Roach teachers that FC Dallas players always look forward to meeting Frisco ISD students and encouraging them to do well in school.
